Parking Tips

Royal BC Museum and
National Geographic IMAX Theatre

The Royal BC Museum does not own or operate a parking lot, but there are several privately run lots nearby as well as parking on the surrounding streets. You'll pay $2.00 per hour to park close to the museum. Most parking lots allow you to stay as many hours as you are prepared to pay for, while most on-street meters and parking zones limit your stay to two hours or less.

You will probably want two to four hours to enjoy the exhibits in the Royal BC Museum. Allow extra time for browsing our shops, eating lunch at the Museum Café, exploring the current special exhibit or seeing a film at the National Geographic IMAX Theatre.

There is a short-term disabled parking drop-off zone on Belleville Street in front of the museum's main entrance. Longer term parking for those with disabilities is available at the rear of the museum off Superior Street in a Robbins pay-parking lot. Please display your disability decal in both cases. Ramps provide wheelchair access to both the museum and theatre.

The main parking operators in our area are listed below.

City of Victoria

www.city.victoria.bc.ca/residents/parking.shtml
Tel: 250-361-0260 for street parking information
Tel: 250-361-0331 for parkade information

The city offers on-street metered and unmetered parking, parkades and parking lots. Parkades cannot handle over-height vehicles, such as camper vans, RVs and large vehicles with roof-top luggage carriers.

As of April 2003, City of Victoria parkades are free of charge on Sundays and public holidays; meters are free every day after 6:00 pm and all day on Sundays. This policy may change, so please read signs and meters carefully to avoid a ticket.

Metered on-street parking is limited to two hours or less (the limit is stated on the meter); meters accept $1 and 25-cent coins. Most unmetered parking is in the semi-residential area to the south and west of the museum and is time-limited.

Robbins Parking

www.robbinsparking.com
Tel: 250-382-4411

Robbins Parking lots generally dispense a pre-paid ticket from an on-site machine. These machines accept payment by coins ($2, $1, 25-cent); most also accept credit cards.

If you pay, but the machine does not produce a ticket, do not leave a note on your vehicle as lot patrollers will ignore it. Instead, call Robbins immediately and leave a message with the following information: license number, parking location, method of payment, how much paid, date and time of payment, your name and home phone number. If lot patrollers have issued you a ticket for failure to display a receipt, this will allow Robbins to confirm that the correct procedure was followed and to check that the machine was out of order at the time of purchase. It may also help you to dispute a parking ticket.
(Tip: If you pay by credit card you will eventually have a record of the transaction via your credit statement, just in case the ticket dispenser is not working properly.)
